A DIY For The Weekend

Last weekend I did something I'd been wanting to do for a while. I made homemade laundry detergent (I know, very exciting). I had pinned a few different "recipes" for laundry soap and decided I didn't really want to make the liquid kind - especially since the recipes I stumbled upon seemed to be large batches and if for some reason I decided I didn't like it I would be stuck with a whole LOT of stuff I didn't want.

Most of the recipes that I found for powdered laundry detergent were fairly similar and extremely easy. All they included were 3 ingredients: Borax, Washing Soda (or pure baking soda), and a soap bar {Suggested soap bars - Ivory and Fels-Napatha - I used a Sunlight laundry soap bar}.

Get ready for this. All you do...

1. Grate 1 bar of soap
2. Mix it with 1 cup of Borax & 1 cup of washing soda

The end result...

I read that it is fine for HE machines (which is what I have) and that you only need 1-2 tbsp of soap per load. I tried it out on a load of towels first, just to see. It is essentially scent free {or has very little scent at all} and I think that it worked out great! I still haven't used it for on our clothing yet but, the other day I did wash my slip covers with it! I tend to lean more towards 2 tbsp when I use it.

Overall, I really enjoy it and will more than likely make up some other batches!
I haven't quite figured out the cost compared to buying laundry detergent from the store to see what I would be saving, but next time I make a batch I am going to keep track of how many loads of laundry I can get out of 1 batch and compare the cost that way. Either way, I'm still glad I made it and it seems to be working out great.

Here are the 2 main places I got my "recipe" from: here & here

Have you ever made homemade laundry detergent? If so, what kind - powdered or liquid? Do you like it? I'd love to hear your feedback.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I made my own with that same recipe over a year ago and it's been great! It lasts for months so it's much cheaper than buying premade detergent. It also gets our clothes nice and clean which is great bc my husband gets dir-ty at work. I don't think I'll ever go back!

  3. Hilary - glad to hear that the detergent works well for you! Like I said, I've only been using it on my towels - which it seems to be working great!

Diana - let me know what you think when you do!
